Waste Management in India – Perspectives and Challenges

India generates about 60 million tonnes of trash every year. Ten million tonnes of garbage is generated in just the metropolitan cities: Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Kolkata. Looking at the enormous challenge that urban centres in India are facing on this issue, there is an urgent need to move beyond the linear production – consumption – disposal approaches which was widely adopted in the 20th Century.
